I Want a PhD

A non academic approach to approaching academia

When I finished my PhD, I realised that I really enjoyed the process of compiling a piece of work into a book. Well, if you want me to be honest, I didn’t enjoy the process as much as I did enjoy the final outcome of having something on my hands to hold. So I decided to write my second book, which will be about the process of doing a PhD :)

I have to mention that many of the concepts and ideas that I am talking about in this book are not necessarily based on actual research. Most of them are my personal reflections based on my experiences and sometimes the examples used are not factual but are there to help understand the methods described in this book. Therefore, a non-academic approach is used for the biggest part. Nevertheless, I hope that you will find some useful information in here to help you go through your research.

I started writing some chapters that I had in mind and I am trying to stitch them together in a logical outline. The outline is presented below, and I will go on adding chapters as time goes on.

Technical aspects

  • Reproducible research
  • The power of LaTeX
  • Version control

  • How to make the most of your computer
  • Useful software tool for researchers
  • Test driven development
  • Keep your stress low with back-ups
  • Documentation of your research
